Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13 / Luke 8:19-21
A proverb is a short, well-known saying, stating a general truth or piece of advice.
Some examples of proverbs are:
Actions speak louder than words; look before you leap; beggars can’t be choosers.
Some proverbs are from logical human wisdom, while some proverbs have a spiritual dimension.
In the Bible, there is a Book of Proverbs, and today’s 1st reading is taken from that book.
In the Book of Proverbs are more than just wise practical sayings.
Those sayings also show how God directs people’s lives.
So, for the king, his heart is like water in the hands of the Lord who turns the king’s heart to the Lord’s will.
And for the wicked, a warning is given to them for the Lord for they will be hurled to destruction.
And in Jesus, the wisdom of God reveals a deep dimension for family and blood relationships.
As Jesus said in the gospel: My mother and my brothers are those who hear the Word of God and put it into practice.
May we too listen to the Word of God, and learn from the divine wisdom, to carry out the will of God in our lives.
