Philippians 2:12-18 / Luke 14:25-33

We who believe that Jesus is our Lord and Saviour should not be too anxious or worried about the now or the future.

Much less should we fear any distress and turmoil because we believe that Jesus is here to save us.

But that doesn't mean that we can be care-free about life or throw caution to the wind.

In fact, more so as Christians, we should be on our guard against the wiles and snares of the devil, because the devil is like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat.

In the 1st reading, St. Paul tells the Philippians to work for their salvation with trembling and fear.

Indeed, our salvation in Christ is such a precious gift that the devil wants to rob us of it and hence we must hold on to Christ in trembling and fear for only He can save us.

St. Paul also urges us to do all that has to be done without complaining or arguing, and then we will be innocent and genuine, perfect children of God among a deceitful and underhand brood, and we will shine in the world like bright stars.

That is a beautiful and powerful image because we are called to offer the world the Word of Life.

So as much as we should work for our salvation in trembling and fear, let us also be courageous with faith and hope, because Jesus has conquered the world and saved us.
